Storyboard

This is the storyboard for our music video high school in Jakarta. I made the performance scene at the beach location and my teammate (Jocelyn) did the storyboard of School location and the rest. 

This is the storyboard that I made which is the performance scene in the beach.

Self Reflection: This storyboard is really hard to make as many drawings and writings per scene which makes it complicated for me. However it really gave me the idea of how I wanted the performance to be from the pose to the time (per sec) which really gives a clear guideline for the projects so that it is not too vague and unidirectional. From the storyboard, me and my teammate discussed on how we would like our music performance video to be more freeflow (as the scene is in the beach) and still very relatable as our contents aim to relate to high schoolers so not too perfect kind of shooting, but more of an open and free + fun kind of performance and shooting (we want to capture the rawness of realness and relatable emotions)

Jocy drew the main storyboard for the music video which was shot as school and friend's house.

Self Reflection: I think making ideas into a storyboard instead of just ideas in lyric sheets really gives out clear guidelines of timestamps to follow as it would also be easier for the editor to edit out when timing is right. The storyboard also gives out the ideas into a much more clearer visual which makes it easier for me and my friend Jocelyn to be able to combine our ideas. However some things e encounter during making storyboards is that both of us are not as good at drawing so it took us more time to draw, and there are some technical difficulties for Jocelyn (there was a power outage), so it definitely took more time to redraw. However so very grateful that me and Jocelyn are able to communicate well and finish off well.

Theories

(Made by my teacher) Here are the different theories we learnt

Self Reflection: These are all the element needed in order to produce a great music video, such as from camera, edits, mis en scene, and sound. From Mr Nick's lesson i definitely learned way more then without theories as most of the times it is great to start from theories and basics esp for our newest project music video, we would need to incorporate lots of elements into the music video as we are doing everything alone (unless asking for advice or inputs from Mr Nick). 

Filming Schedule

This is our filming schedule that I made for the music video High school in Jakarta. 

Screen Test

 To find a star for our music video we need to conduct a screen test. Here is a video of our class's group audition (we did i in a class).

The advantages and disadvantages are taken from my teammate's blog Jocelyn as we are aiming for the same star in our music video.

Advantages:

- This was done at the last 10 minutes of class without having to stay after school, it did not take up too much of anyone's time

- We did this with a class of 24 students, so there were a variety of personalities to choose from 

- Also because there were a lot of students, everyone was having fun and were comfortable.

Disadvantages: 

- Despite it being a big class of students, some students were still awkward and wasn't as comfortable as others were

- It wasn't done as a proper and formal screen test, so it might be a bit messy as it's not a professional screen test

Self Reflection: It wasn't as comfortable for everyone to do the screen test as most of us might not even memorize or know the song, and it wasn't a slow paced and easily guessable song. However we all managed to try and not be awkward around the camera and it definitely helped that there are 24 students in this class who are being recorded in the same time (emotional support). The Star actor we choose from this clip was (Sharon-me) as Hannah in the music video. We choose her as she is one team with us which makes it easily accessible for us and we are aiming for an honest, true to yourself kind of look which we are not looking for a very expurgated kind of performance video but rather a more calm and relatable kind of music video. 

Location scout & risk assesment

This is our location scout & risk assessment for the music "high school in Jakarta" made by me and Jocelyn.

Self Reflection: The location scout started of with me and Jocelyn doing it together, however since i could not think in details on things that might happen during the filming process, Jocy ended up doing most of the location scout and I was doing other task that we split up on such as song research. However from Jocelyn's location scout one thing i see is that she focuses on risk that are more likely to happen instead of the very vague ones i think of such as tsunami(?) and tsunamis dont usually happen in Bali so, it's not as useful. I think giving actual risk assessments for minor things that might happen would really help our group get more prepared on things we might need to bring, do, ect.

Statement of intent

 This is my statement of intent for the music video "High School in Jakarta".

Me and my teammate Jocelyn did this together on one of our teacher's (Mr Nick's) classes.

Self Reflection: When we first got the project it was a pretty huge thing to narrow down our ideas and. our main aim for the music video as we are not sure to subvert from the conventions to the more sad side of high school or confirm to the conventions of a typical american high school as portrayed in the original music video. However my teammate Jocelyn suggested that we should make it subvert from the conventions as we want the audience to relate to it to a deeper level, as to give a more raw and honest music video. The statement of intent also helped us narrow down our target audience, and even our roles for the jobs as we needed to make sure things first beforehand so we don't get confused in the middle of making the process of our music video.

Song Research

 This post is made by me, here we will look in detail at our song choice : 'High School in Jakarta, NIKI' 2022

"High School in Jakarta" is a song by Indonesian singer-songwriter Niki. It was released by 88rising as the third and final single from her second studio album, Nicole (2022), on 5 August 2022. “High School in Jakarta” revisits Indonesian singer-songwriter NIKI’s high school years. After revealing the challenge of maintaining a long-distance relationship and the end of this relationship in the videos of “Before” and “Oceans & Engines,” the video of the third and final single off NIKI’s sophomore album depicts how the young couple fell in love in high school. As a prequel to the previous music videos, from a nostalgic lens, we see how NIKI and her ex-lover met in the drama club, how they fell in love, and how they came up with their couple handshake, which also appeared in the previous videos. 

The reason we choose this music video is as high school in Jakarta music video is representing our daily life as a high school student. The themes, mis en scenes, events in the music video represents us as high school students which makes us relate to it better. Moreover, the scenes locating at school would be easier for us to film as we have access to the location. 

Our music video will subvert from the conventions in high school in Jakarta. This is as the music video has connotations has typical high school vibes such as love, friendship and school dramas. However, my team would like to show the darker side of high school which is usually overlooked by people such as in academics, breakups, friendships and navigating throughout our high school years. By showing the darker side of highschool we are able to show a more raw, honest and relatable perspective which goes above the idealized image of highschool videos represented in media. 

Self Reflection: We actually already analyzed high school in Jakarta on our big research and smaller research. However we research on pop conventions and what we like and dislike. In this song research, we research more in depth on the plot, reason we choose the music video and the overall idea of what kind of music video we wanted to make using their music which really helps us get a grip on our ideas.

This is the first draft of our lyric sheet before I talked to our teacher to see if there were any improvements. 

Here is the second and final draft for the lyric sheet. I talked to our teacher about what he could suggest to add or improve on, here are the suggestions

- make the ex boyfriend's new girlfriend's face always hidden (camera always behind her/facing away) to pull all the focus towards the boy to emphasis that their break up was always his fault and that the new girl is just salt added to the wound

- before the music video starts (10-15 seconds) show Hannah (the main character/artist) going through a box of old memories from her time with the ex boyfriend (old hoodies, plushies, pictures, love letters) at the beginning in the beach

Extra Note(s)

- The "couples" list off to the left is a list of couples and other friends we have asked/considered to be side actors in our music video

Self Reflection: At first when we first started with lyrics sheets to be honest i didn't think it was really that useful since we already have storyboard. However it proved to be very useful especially for the process of getting our ideas out into actual scenes and visuals. This is because my friend jocy per 2 words or more came up with a scene and just write and annotate all across the lyric sheets in order to remember them. This also proved very useful when making the story board since the vague timeline has already been set with the set of scenes already written in the lyrics. Jocy did a very good job in being the inspiration of our groups as she always have new ideas that she came up with (which is why lyrics sheets are needed so she wouldn't forget abt it) and she would discuss it with me in order to make sure if it suits are theme and ask for inputs if I have any.
